The Ministry of Legal and Constitutional Affairs has officially named the high-level Constitutional Reform Committee (CRC), which will provide expert guidance and oversight to Jamaica’s smooth transition from a Constitutional Monarchy to a Republic.
The Committee represents members of the Government, Parliamentary Opposition, the Attorney General, constitutional law and governance experts, representatives from academia and civil society, along with a youth advisor.
The work will be executed in three phases:
Phase1: Repatriation of our Constitution, abolition of the Constitutional Monarchy and the establishment of the Republic of Jamaica and all other matters that need a referendum.
Phase 2: Review of the wordings and provisions of the Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms and the other ordinarily established provisions.
Phase 3: Full assessment of the nation’s legal and constitutional infrastructure to facilitate drafting of a new Constitution of Jamaica.
The Government of Jamaica is embarking on the most comprehensive constitutional reform work to transform Jamaica from a Constitutional Monarchy to a Republic.
The goal is to ultimately produce a new Constitution of Jamaica, establishing the Republic of Jamaica and affirming our self determination and cultural heritage.
